The Spanish Association of Daily Newspaper Publishers - the ENPA General Assembly adopts its Seville resolution

On the occasion of the European Newspaper Publishers’ Association (ENPA) Autumn General Assembly meeting in Seville, Spain on 6 November 2009, hosted by ENPA’s Spanish member association “Asociación de Editores de Diario Españoles (AEDE)” – the Spanish Association of Daily Newspaper Publishers - the ENPA General Assembly adopts its Seville resolution. Newspaper publishers across Europe are calling in their resolution on the new European Parliament and Commission and the other European Union Institutions to ensure the necessary conditions for a free and independent press.

Pilar de Yarza, President of Asociación de Editores de Diario Españoles  AEDE underlined in her speech to the ENPA Board: “The daily newspapers are still the main tool to know what is happening. And to know it in a human, reflexive and democratic manner. In Europe, as in the rest of the world, the free Press is and will continue to be the main guarantor of a democratic society.”

“Newspapers are the best instrument to link Brussels to the citizens, whether at national, regional or local level”, said the Spanish Secretary General for European Affairs Mr. Miguel Angel Navarro when he presented the priorities of the upcoming Spanish Presidency of the EU at the ENPA General Assembly in Seville.

Mr. Valdo Lehari jr., President of ENPA highlighted to Secretary General Navarro: “A

healthy newspaper industry benefits democracy and European citizens. This requires that the freedom of the press is guaranteed and alive through both economic and legal means.”
